Watercolor Ink Blending, Start to Finish

This is the technique behind most of the soft backgrounds you'll see across my card projects — it looks painted, but it's really just two ink colors and a blending sponge.

Supply List

Steps

  1. Start with the lighter ink color and work it in small circles from the outer edge of your panel inward.
  2. Add the deeper shade only at the corners or one edge, blending it toward the center so it fades rather than stops abruptly.
  3. Spritz very lightly with water and let it sit for a few seconds for a softer, more diffused look — optional, but it adds a lot of texture.
  4. Let it dry fully before stamping on top, or the ink can smear.

Watch the full walkthrough below — I go a little slower on camera than in the photos, which helps if this is your first time blending.
